Ambassadors who use Twitter to share the back story of meeting; ministers posting videos on YouTube to back their arguments; international organizations opening up a Facebook page to communicate with citizens. These are just a few examples that highlight the growing use of social media by international institutions in the 21 century. All this has created a new and unusual panorama of global communication. This fast changing phenomenon has fascinating sides but it also raises many concerning questions.
Are these new digital tools really changing the way we communicate with politicians and governments? Or is it just a technological rehash of old school propaganda methods? What political influence can citizens exercise in this new society shaped by the web? Are governments ready to challenge the traditional model of leadership and decision-making? Will international institutions be capable of truly opening up to the ideas and demands made by citizens?
These are some of the questions that Free as the Web, a Rena project for the freedom of the internet, hopes to answer in a conference entitled “The Rise of Digital Diplomacy – Using Social Media to Inform and Engage Citizens”.
The event will be held on Tuesday, November 13th at 12.30 at the European Parliament building in Brussels (Spinelli Building – Room A8F388). To discussion will be lead by:
